It’s been Tough, It’s been Rough, It’s been Enough

A powerful poem written by LB, a Foster Carer (shared with permission), in her attempt to deepen her connection, understanding and empathy towards her foster child, and support her foster child to put his experiences into words.

Nobody gets me, nobody knows, they all judge me by the behaviour I show

No one knows what goes on deep, what happens in my deepest sleep

They don’t get what goes on underneath, what monsters hide beneath the sheets

They don’t know what makes me me, And what it is that I have seen.

If they had lived the life I’ve lived, they’d know how hard it is to give

They’d know how hard it is to trust, what they all seem to see as must

But they don’t get that’s very hard, when family has left you forever scarred

So I’ll just go on and pretend, until my time in care meets its end.

It’s been tough, it’s been rough, it’s been enough

Life’s not hot, pain I’ve got, that’s my lot

So forgive me, just let me be, I can’t see

What you say is yet to come, it’s just too dumb.

I won’t bad mouth the love I got, even when mine were the scraps from the pot,

As parents’ blows swept the room, putting family future into deathly doom

They weren’t to know that I’d lose out, That social services would take me out

And our world would never be the same, So we are family, only in name.

It’s been tough, it’s been rough, it’s been enough

Life’s not hot, pain I’ve got, that’s my lot

So forgive me, just let me be, I can’t see

What you say is yet to come, it’s just too dumb.

But you say I’m called a survivor, soon to be a succeeder and thriver,

And you will work with me each and every day, to help me find my future way

You say that’s what you’re here to do, to help dream big and get me through

Sticking with me in thick and thin, and watching me eventually win.

It’s not that I don’t care, I just find it hard to share

But no matter what I throw, you say that you won’t go

Forgive me if I make it hard, but I didn’t choose life’s card

Dealt to me or to you, but please just see it through.

It’s been tough, it’s been rough, it’s been enough

Life’s not hot, pain I’ve got, that’s been my lot

So forgive me. Don’t let me be, but help me see

What you say is yet to come, what you say is yet to come.
